alterations and refurbishment of 1960's villa house, kirriemuir

the client asked Gary to provide a design for a complete stripping out and refurbishment of the existing property to allow the structure to be made sufficiently heat and energy efficient for modern family living

the existing monopitch roofs were replaced with new highly insulated, high performance flat roof finishes with new rooflight; complete internal stripping out allowed the building to be completely re-insulated and re-serviced with the installation of a new underfloor heating system to serve the mostly completely open plan layout of the revised dwelling

new high performance timber windows and doors were combined with locally sourced timber cladding and new smooth wall render; the creation of both covered and uncovered external living spaces with sliding doors to provide level access between internal and external spaces

the main lounge, south and west facing terrace canopy featured circular port-hole rooflights has trasformed what was previously a very dated, too hot in summer and too warm in winter living space into a stunning modern lounge spaces

the same palette of stonework walls, slate roofs and locally fabricated timber windows helps the new building blend almost seamlessly into the rural Angus landscape.

top and side lit cosy living spaces exist throughout the revised dwelling - sliding door screens allow the building to be opened up or sub-divided according to family need

new rendered walls were coloured to give the various courtyards different aesthetics and functional uses to suit the needs of the adjacent internal spaces
